Genome of S. microadriaticum shed light on symbiosis-specific adaptations

22 December, 2016

Besides contributing the third Symbiodinium genome to the public domain, we identified specific adaptations that all sequenced Symbiodinium shared that likely stems from their symbiotic lifestyle.

We show that Symbiodiniums harbour expanded repertoires of transporters linked to the provision of carbon and nitrogen. These expansions tend to be species-specific, which suggest a potential mechanism for these symbionts to adapt to specific hosts.
